ABSTRACT:

Reservoir performance in CO₂-EOR and CCUS can be strongly influenced by pore-scale heterogeneities that are easily overlooked in conventional characterization, with uncertainty potentially underestimated by one to two orders of magnitude. Pore-scale variations in mineral wetting surfaces, connected pore size distribution, mineral surface rugosity, and brine composition each play a sometimes surprisingly large role in fluid-rock interaction, wettability behavior, capillary trapping, and therefore the predicted recovery or storage response. These variations can be obscured in bulk or aggregate measurements to which models are often calibrated, and reservoir characterizations will benefit from automated mineralogy and digital analysis of cuttings and core which reveal these subtle but impactful heterogeneities.

BIOGRAPHY:

Matt Flannery (Stratum) is the Geoscience and Engineering Director at Stratum Reservoir, where he leads an international multi-disciplinary team of SMEs supporting client solutions. He spent 15 years with Shell E&P and BHP Petroleum, supporting projects ranging from access exploration to EOR.  Matt then ran his own consultancy for 5 years before joining Stratum in 2020. He has a BSc and a PhD in Chemistry, both from the University of Bristol, UK.
