ABSTRACT:

Gamma Ray-based geosteering has become the golden standard of well placement in US onshore wells these days. However, there is a need for more advanced tools for the wells drilled in complex formations with challenging fluid contacts and laterally discontinuous geology. Resistivity tools can be successfully implemented to address most of these issues. Depending on the drilling objective, different types of resistivity tools can be used: conventional resistivity (laterlog or propagation tools), deep-azimuthal, and ultradeep-azimuthal. Interpretation of data from propagation resistivity tools often can be quite complex as these tools have depth of investigation values that reaches 10s of feet vertically. Forward modeling, deterministic, and stochastic inversions are used to build a geosteering model that can be utilized for proactive well placement recommendations. The following topics will be discussed: - Propagation resistivity theory - Deterministic inversion for non-azimuthal proactive geosteering and case studies - Deep-azimuthal tools available on the market. Comparison and case studies - Ultra-deep azimuthal tools case studies
